      TR16 Ira Rakatansky: Mid-century Modern in Providence

      Walking & Bus TourLynnette Widder, Columbia University, Tour LeaderAIA CES: 4 LUArchitect and historian Lynnette Widder will lead a tour of several of Rakatansky's buildings. A student of Gropius and Breuer, Rakatansky was the first Jewish licensed architect in the state and a champion of American Modernism. Starting in the early 1940s, Rakatansky applied his knowledge of construction, gained while working on his contractor father's job sites, to realize residential, commercial, and religious buildings in Providence and environs. The tour will focus on several of his residential buildings on Providence's East Side, including his own house (1958) and his sanctuary and community house for the Church of God and Saints of Christ. This tour is open to the public and is part of the 72nd Annual International Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians.   FAQs How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
