Norman Rockwell and Highlights of American Illustration

Inside the National Museum of American Illustration, you’ll find a kaleidoscope of art reflecting the culture of America. Immerse yourself in the country’s extensive visual history with a self-guided tour of the American Imagist Collection, which features the second-largest number of Norman Rockwell paintings, as well as the largest collection of original paintings by Maxfield Parrish, J.C. Leyendecker and more. Painted to be reproduced in advertisements, periodicals, newspapers and more, the NMAI displays the original artworks behind quintessential American images inside Vernon Court, a Gilded Age mansion built in 1898 on Newport’s historic Bellevue Avenue. On exhibit now are the oil paintings, works on paper and accompanying artifacts that highlight the work of Howard Pyle, known as the “Father of American Illustration,” and the generation of celebrated illustrators he taught. Admission also includes access to the adjacent Frederick Law Olmsted Park and Arboretum, the grounds of which were designed by Olmsted, the first American landscape architect.
